Ball joints are a ball-and-socket joint used to connect suspension and steering components. Ball joints also allow steering knuckles to pivot from side to side as the wheels are turned.
As a ball joint wears, steering response deteriorates, and the joint may become noisy. They should be inspected as part of a regular maintenance schedule, and replaced, as needed. Joint separation commonly results in a potentially catastrophic loss of vehicle control.
